Swaskosh Shuddhi Kriya

Swaskosh Shuddhi Kriya (Lung Purification Technique) came as a series of slow and steady insights as I practiced my daily 90-120 minute pranayama religiously for years.

How does the Program work? 🧐

Step 1

Beginning with an exhale is best;

Step 2

Inhale a comfortably full breath through the NOSE and hold for a few seconds;

Step 3

Tongue gently against the upper palate, exhale slowly, slower the better through the NOSE;

Step 4

Once exhale feels complete, start contracting/pushing/squeezing from the stomach area (lower possible if you have practiced yoga and pranayama) and then chest, collarbone area. Push/squeeze, relax inner muscles; push/squeeze, relax alternatively until you feel you’ve comfortably done the most. Hold for a couple of seconds; your stomach and chest muscles must remain very relaxed, except with pushing/squeezing and then return to being relaxed;

Step 5

Inhale slowly through the NOSE, tongue gently against the upper palate. Fill your lungs to the maximum, a comfortable maximum, hold the breath for a few seconds and then exhale through the NOSE very slowly…

If you feel the need to clear your throat and lungs of phlegm, please do so…in a handy spittoon or container (kept for this purpose);

Step 6

Repeat the process 4/5 times at the beginning. Listen to your body and squeeze/push/contract gently. Later, as your body begins to respond well, both pressure and repetitions may be increased. AT ALL TIMES LISTEN TO YOUR BODY and don’t overdo anything unless you’re directly under my guidance then and I advise more than you’re doing.

Details about the Program

Swaskosh Shuddhi Kriya (Lung Purification Kriya) – Part 1

This vigorous huffing (mouth blowing) is part of the ‘Swaskosh Shuddhi Kriya’ (Lung Purification Kriya)

One simple technique to expel maximum stale air is detailed below:

      • Relax your chest and belly area, exhale as much as air as can be comfortably done through the mouth;
      • Hold the breath without inhalation for a few seconds and expel air through the mouth again, reasonably forcefully but without discomforting yourself. Try to expel air from the lowest part of your lungs;
      • Repeat step 2 a few times until you feel your lungs have nearly emptied;
      • Breathe slowly through the nostrils until the lungs are comfortably filled with fresh air;
      • Repeat the exhalation as in steps 1 and 2, viz. exhale through the mouth in short bursts a few times until lungs are almost emptied;
      • Do the inhalation and exhalation cycle 10/12 times and you’ll have a lot of fresh air in the lungs;

While doing the exhalation, you might expectorate or breathe out mucus/phlegm. Do not swallow the phlegm/sputum/mucus. Spit it out safely in an appropriate way.

Please follow these instructions and exhale your way to great, healthy and coronavirus-free lungs!

As I experimented with my breath in my laboratory, my body, I began to see and experience things I hadn’t found referenced anywhere. I continued experimenting and noticed the effects. There were so many I can’t even begin to enumerate them but I’m detailing a few here:

      •  Lungs – my lungs have become clean and largely free from most toxins and phlegm. Result is I can hold my breath a very long time viz. one breath cycle can last 4…5 and one occasion even more than 6 minutes. The breath feels light and easy. The congestion and heaviness I used to feel daily, especially in the mornings is gone and on waking up, the breath feels very smooth and easy. It is a wonderful feeling to be able to breathe as if one were in an environment free of pollutants as in a mountain forest;
      • Nadis – those familiar with yoga and pranayama know something about ‘nadis’ which are channels of energy in the body. My nadis have become largely clear and the flow of energy is unimpeded and unobstructed;
      •  Breath and energy – since I breathe easier and much more smoothly than I ever have (at least in my memory) my energy levels have skyrocketed. My oxygen absorption has improved markedly;
      •  Sleep – sleep has become usually relaxed, dreamless and refreshing. As a result, I feel rested even when I sleep 5/6 hours against the 7/8 hours earlier even after which I used to feel lethargic and sleepy during the day;
      •  Libido – there’s been an obvious enhancement in the libido and the ‘morning woody’ is now a rule again most days;
      •  Meditation – it’s easy to feel meditative and I can sit in meditation almost whenever I choose to do so;
      •  Voice quality – the quality of the voice has undergone a remarkable change and though I’m not a singer I can sing songs I dared not earlier because the voice can touch notes and highs/lows it couldn’t earlier. Also, the voice has acquired a certain ‘richness’ that did not exist earlier;
      •  Skin tone – the skin feels and looks brighter and seems to glow, according to those who have known and observed the difference;
      •  Spirits – depression, feeling low, moroseness etc are past and there’s almost no occasion now when I feel these emotions. I’m almost always very relaxed, calm and composed. Almost nothing seems able to pull me down, not even very trying situations or difficulties;
      •  Concentration – levels of concentration have gone very high and I don’t feel the need for excitement to keep me going…

There’s a lot more but these are some important changes I’ve noticed over the past few months. Many niggles like constipation, piles, cough and cold are no more a part of my life. Headaches, stomachaches and common conditions like these are not a part of my life experience any longer.

Isn’t that quite a list? A little bit of self-care, pranayama, morning walks and Swaskosh Shuddhi Kriya have helped me achieve a level of wellness most can only dream of.

I hope this inspires you enough to try and make the most of your life which is an opportunity to raise yourself in the body, energy, mind, intelligence and sense of blissfulness.
