Procastrination is an extremely common phenomenon and is often responsible for much more damage than even bad decisions.
In many ways, the roots of procastrination lie in the fear of making a mistake. To avoid making a mistake, one chooses not to act which oftentimes is far worse than the damage that may have occurred through a mistake.
Procastrination is usually born out of a state of stupor due to overthinking. When one is scared he might make a mistake, he starts thinking and examining a decision, act or choice from many different perspectives. Sometimes, his examination goes deep. Usually, it just goes around in circles…One allows himself the comfort of staying in a place where he cannot be accused of making a mistake. The possible or imagined accuser can be someone else but usually, it’s oneself! It’s so easy to say or believe, ‘I’m thinking’.
Thinking sounds like an elevated, sophisticated, intellectual thing. After all, thinkers are considered socially superior! Actually, one is not thinking because if he were he’d be aware of the loss or damage caused by so much thinking and not acting, deciding, choosing etc. That’s OVERTHINKING! However, there’s a way out of this debilitating condition.
If one were to ask himself a few questions, he’d be easily shaken out of his stupor.
What’s so bad about a mistake? How would it hurt him? Is he better off not doing, acting, choosing? What’s the worst that could happen if he were making a mistake…how would he gain and benefit of his action, decision, choice was right?
By doing this little exercise, he can soon have a perspective…a perspective, that can suddenly energize and motivate him to roll his sleeves up and get cracking!
After all, life abounds and often thrives despite, inspite and often because of mistakes!
Many apparent mistakes often prove to be good choices!
Trust life, trust your instincts which often knows a lot better than the confused mind…choose, decide and act! Who knows, it could turn out to be one of your best decisions!
