The power, usefulness and need for meditation is now well-known and acknowledged universally.

To meditate is normally assumed to mean, silencing the mind and that is fair. It’s definitely something needed by all.

Question is how to silence the mind, how to stop the thoughts? That’s an aspect few speak about. Silencing the mind easily said but not easily done.

And, because silencing the mind is not easy, many speak about becoming a witness to the flow of thoughts…Thoughts usually don’t stop easily for many who meditate, especially those who are new to the practice.

Indeed, watching the thoughts takes us to the ‘witness’ state which is actually a very powerful state. In the witness state one becomes aware of the thoughts passing like a stream of moving images on a screen. They come and they go…and usually, because they’re being witnessed, they cannot hold sway too long.

The witness state is therefore very useful in meditation. And, all must try to discover and experience it as often as possible. In fact, witness state can empower us immensely even as we go through our daily tasks and chores and life…

This piece wants to focus on a different, usually ignored aspect about thoughts. While there is a positive quality thoughts possess, most of the time what we call ‘thoughts’ is actually not thought because we’re barely even aware of them and they’re not taking us in any direction. They’re just some random memories from the past and projections of worries for an uncertain future.

So, know that most of the time, our thoughts are really not thoughts but simply uncontrolled regrets, regurgitations, imagination, projection, worries etc about what may have happened and could happen if…

These so-called thoughts are usually emotions that take on the cloak of thoughts. It’s just a language of the emotions colored by memories of all that we have learnt about, heard, experienced, read etc…

So, think about your thoughts…are they not usually some kind of emotion masquerading as thoughts?

Remember, thoughts can actually be very powerful, creative and useful.

These so-called ‘thoughts’ that are usually active inside us may be triggered by past events or future concerns. The present moment has little space for these fake ‘thoughts’. However, emotions and their effects are constantly felt by us…and they create their picture of thoughts!

So, to really become meditative, one needs to quieten these emotions acting like thoughts.

Emotions are usually very powerful energy and are a collection of a lot of past desires, memories, actions, fears, guilt, regrets etc…

Most of these tend to be negative emotions.

Unless these powerful emotions are neutralised or silenced, meditation cannot happen.

Breath, especially watching the breath, can be a very effective way to silence the mind by quietening the emotions. Remember, mind is mostly a collection of memories connected with these emotions. And, it’s a very powerful combo because it effectively directs our choices, actions, words and life.

If negative emotions direct our lives, naturally our lives will have a largely negative orientation and that will bring its share of pain and worse…

Emotions are connected with our chakras which are like special consciousness and memory files. These chakras have files related to all that we may have experienced directly and also through our ancestors…

When the lower chakras are active, they produce and send out emotions that they produce. These emotions impact or create our ‘thoughts’ and together they impel us to make choices, actions and desires etc.

When we learn to activate higher chakras, we can break the cycle of negative thoughts, emotions, actions, KARMA etc.

Slowly, the production of negative emotions and thoughts reduces and we can move towards more positive emotions, thoughts, choices, words, actions etc.

These will help not only in better meditation but also in directing us towards a more positive and fulfilling life where we can move towards and achieve our highest goals…

In meditation we create laser beams that carve the pathways we walk…
