Intimacy, in my understanding, is the deepest expression of one’s appreciation of a person, idea or thing. When intimacy is offered it is also received. And when intimacy is shared the one sharing it opens themselves to the one they’re offering this gift of intimacy. To bare oneself before something is to hold back nothing, hide nothing…It means sharing one’s deepest secrets…
Intimacy truly only happens when one dedicates themselves to something. What can be greater dedication or worship than attention? When we go to temples and witness ‘abhishekam’, we need to stop and wonder why our gods need to be bathed in water and other substances. They might certainly serve some important practical and ritualistic purposes but more than anything, it’s a reminder to bathe those that we worship in the ‘abhishekam’ of our attention, to open ourselves totally and to receive without reservation what is offered in return. And, yes, if anything is offered sincerely, it will come back replenished in its own special way.
If we learn to pour our attention on anything, it begins to share its secrets. That’s the secret one needs to learn and engrave in their hearts.
Of all that we do etc in life, nothing is more critical than that quiet humble breath that passes unnoticed through your nostrils, deep into your lungs and heart and spreads itself out throughout your being. It does so 24-hours a day, non-stop, no matter what you are doing. Yet, most times most people pay it ZERO attention. They pay no attention to that which brings and sustains life.
If that’s not a shame, nothing can be!
If only, one begins to change this…and learns to shower a little more attention on their breath…every little extra ounce of attention that you give your breath, your breath shall return it multiplied manifold.
First, the drama of the ego-mind-emotion will be directly controlled and reduced. That itself will be a huge benefit. Better health, more well-being, greater energy, increased clarity, more productivity, deeper states of calmness will be some of the early rewards…many more will follow.
Start by watching your breath, see what it does, how it moves through you, where it goes, how it affects you and slowly your breath will begin to show you more of itself, what it does, why, how etc…it will teach you how you can take advantage of its many gifts…
But, first, you must find that little spot deep in your being that connects you with your breath…it’s the same spot where your body calls for the next breath…see if you can find that spot, listen to its call and let your mind multiply that call…
Once this begins to happen, your ‘abhishekam’ of your breath will become a regular occurrence.
Which God can deny his blessings to a devotee who bathes him regularly in the abhishekam of his heartfelt attention!
