What is breathwork? And how can it help me?
Breathwork
Breathwork is taking one part of the world almost by storm. It’s almost as if, suddenly, the world has awakened to a mystery called breathwork!
Well, breathwork is actually simply, very simply, conscious breathing!
For long, much of the western world, particularly, has been unaware and unconcerned about their breath. They viewed breath as something that was necessary but that’s all. It happened on its own and that’s all there was to it! After all, to breathe meant to draw oxygen from the air and exchange it for carbon dioxide inside the lungs!
The eastern world, particularly, areas of Indian and Chinese influence gave it a little more respect and practiced Pranayama, Qi Gong or Tai ji etc.
They knew breath as the means of not just exchanging gases but of taking in Prana or Qi (life force).
Each organ, part and cell in the body depends on this Prana or pranic energy. Of course, oxygen is equally important but that’s not enough!
An estimated 50 trillion cells in the human body, each with an estimated electrical charge of .07 volts needs a lot of this combination of electrical, thermal, kinetic, chemical, radiant, electromagnetic and so on.
The breath brings all these in and makes them available to all parts and organs of the body…indeed, to each and every cell! Or, ideally, that’s what it should do!
Benefits
If you learn breathwork as taught by those who’ve spent years watching and understanding their breath, chances are they will ge able to guide you well along a path that will lead to greater fulfillment – physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, spiritually and even, financially, according to many believers!
Learning to breathe consciously and becoming more aware of your breath can lead to great discoveries and breakthroughs at many levels of your being.
Apart from healing you and helping you overcome chronic conditions and illnesses, it can help you develop a level of clarity that can easily propel you to your highest potential. Check out the RYV (Raise Your Vibrations) program.
What is a very powerful breathwork technique?
There is no ‘one very powerful breathing technique’. Each technique serves a special purpose and delivers a special result. However, Belly Breathing or diaphragmatic breathing is one technique everyone must learn! In fact, think of belly breathing as the foundational technique on which to build an edifice of other powerful techniques. You may watch the video here:
(Please watch and observe how it happens when lying down. Slowly, please allow it to happen all the time)
How do I know if a breathwork is good fit for me?
This is a critical question and is hard to give a generalized answer for.
Start with belly breathing, begin to develop an intimacy with your breath by watching it and seeing how it is affecting you. Slowly, as your awareness of your body and system grows, you might suddenly start getting insights into your own being and what is needed at a particular time, based on your journey (through life).
Otherwise, start practicing pranayamas like Bhastrika, kapal bhati, anulom vilom (Nadi shodhan), udgeeth, bhramari etc. Well known yoga gurus, particularly Baba Ramdev particularly recommend these to all. There are enough videos and resources online. Follow someone like Baba Ramdev or founders/teachers of the better schools of yoga. If necessary, try a few different schools to see which suits you best.
What is the difference between breathwork and meditation?
Breathwork helps balance the Pranamaya Kosha (energy body) which helps in circulating energy more easily and efficiently throughout the body. It helps create conditions where meditativeness and meditation become easier.
Meditation is a condition where one becomes relatively free of the tendencies of his mind. The mind has a tendency to flit from one thing to another. It’s a powerful friend and a dangerous enemy. Since breathwork, by circulating energy through the chakras (endocrine system) helps balance them, meditativeness becomes a more easily accessed experience.
What are the best breathwork books, teachers, resources?
The best place to start is Google where great books and resources are easier to locate. These days, with a plethora of ways and methods, it can be safely said that it’s best to start with established teachers, schools and traditions. Once one attains a certain level of mastery and control over one’s pranamaya kosha, it might be a food idea to start looking for those who can help one dive deeper into the world of breath.
This writer has been teaching special courses with S-VYASA (the hugely respected yoga University in Bangalore, headed by the eminent Dr HR Nagendra) through techniques like the Swaskosh Shuddhi Kriya (Lung Purification Technique) and Tridosha Balancing Program (Kapha Dosha Nivaran) in addition to unique and special courses for ED Reversal (with the Thunderbolt Breath), Lotus Opening (for chakra activation and sushumna expansion) RYV (Raise Your Vibrations) for overcoming one’s limitations and the Hanuman Master Breath program, esp for relief from chronic aches and pains.
Each of these courses offers a special outcome.
